You know context matters.

But what can you do about it?

Context is one of the most challenging aspects of implementation

If you’re supporting implementation or scaling across multiple different sites, you’re likely encountering contextual challenges—some of the largest obstacles to enacting change.

Each setting might have different contextual barriers and facilitators, such as shifting leadership priorities and competing demands. These contextual factors shape fit and readiness, influence sustainability, and determine whether implementation efforts gain traction or stall.

Level 2 Training

‍

How can you move forward strategically to achieve your outcomes?

🌟Context at Scale is part of our Level 2 training offerings, which explore the relational aspects of creating change and build advanced skills to support implementation.

This course focuses on understanding and addressing context across the full lifespan of implementation and scale.

  • You’ll examine context as you determine fit, assess and address readiness, implement, and as you plan for and enact sustainability. Because contextual shifts often require us to make adaptations, you’ll explore how to plan for and track adaptations in a structured, intentional way.

  • We also clarify adjacent topics that often create confusion, including how to consider context in an implementation support role, what it truly means to scale (such as scaling up, scaling out, and scaling deep) and the role of de-implementation.

Understanding context is only part of the equation

This is a highly practical course. You’ll not only learn how to assess context, but also how to identify and apply strategies to address the contextual factors most relevant to your initiative.

Instead of reacting to contextual challenges as they emerge, you’ll learn how to anticipate them, select strategies to address what you can influence, and position your initiative for success across diverse settings.

Along the way, you’ll also gain clarity on which aspects of context are within your control and which aren’t, so you can focus your energy where it’ll have the greatest impact.

This course is for you if…

You’re supporting implementation or scaling across multiple sites and want structured, practical ways to assess and address context and plan for adaptations.

You already have a strong foundation in implementation science, are generally familiar with context assessment, and are ready to go deeper into understanding and navigating context.

You want to proactively plan for sustainability and scale, rather than reactively responding to contextual challenges impeding these processes.

⚠️ Context at Scale is an advanced course

It’s designed for people who are actively implementing or supporting implementation efforts. We assume participants are familiar with key implementation theories, models, and frameworks and have experience applying them in real-world settings.

Completion of our Level 1 courses, StrategEase: The HOW of Creating Sustainable Change and Implementation, Spread, and Scale, is strongly recommended before enrolling in this course, especially if you’re earlier in your learning journey or primarily engaging with implementation science in an academic context.

By taking this course you will…

  • Understand and navigate complex contextual factors that influence implementation, spread, and scale.

  • Clarify what scale means in your setting.

  • Assess fit and readiness across diverse settings and identify strategies to strengthen both.

  • Proactively plan for, make, and track adaptations using a structured, real-world process.

  • Monitor shifting context over time and adjust your approach during implementation and scale.

  • Define and plan for sustainability within your system.

  • Apply implementation supports and equity-informed approaches to improve implementation.

  • Apply what you’ve learned throughout the course and identify next steps in your implementation journey.

Meet your instructors

“I’m so excited for you to join us for this course. It addresses four of the topics that people struggle with the most: context, adaptations, sustainability, and scale. Because I love diving into the nuances and deeply challenging topics and implementation, there’s something about this course that really speaks to me. It doesn’t gloss over what’s hard but instead digs deep and equips you with practical tools to proactively understand and address contextual challenges —while recognizing that some aspects of context remain beyond your control. This is definitely not a course for beginners!”

- Dr. Julia E. Moore

“These are incredibly challenging topics, and it was really rewarding to build this course. It represents how we’ve changed our thinking about context, moving beyond assessing factors to proactively addressing them in different ways. I think for advanced learners, this will feel empowering — it takes this huge thing (context) and makes it feel like something we can take action on. I really connected with the course material and can’t wait to hear what you gain from it!”

- Dr. Sobia Khan

Frequently asked questions

  • In line with our values to make our training highly accessible, there are no prerequisites; however, we highly recommend taking StrategEase: The HOW of Creating Sustainable Change and Implementation, Spread, and Scale before Context at Scale.

Alternatively, if you have an implementation science certificate or degree, that could also serve as a good foundation for this course. Just be prepared that the way we (at The Center for Implementation specifically) talk about implementation is different than how it’s typically presented by researchers and academics, so there will likely be a steep learning curve for you if you’re transitioning from a more research-based setting.

  • Implementation, Spread, and Scale is one of our foundational Level 1 courses. It focuses on how to plan for implementation, including building your team, clarifying roles, and developing a strong implementation plan. It introduces key concepts such as readiness, context, adaptations, and sustainability at a high level. The goal is to help you build a solid foundation for applying implementation science in practice.

Context at Scale is a Level 2 course that goes much deeper into context specifically, which we only touch on lightly in Implementation, Spread, and Scale. It helps you examine specific contextual factors in detail and identify strategies to address them. You’ll explore adaptations more thoroughly and proactively plan for sustainability. This course is designed for those who are currently scaling or planning to scale in the future and want more advanced tools to navigate complex environments with greater intention and nuance.

  • This course is open for enrollment year-round, so you can join anytime!

As soon as you enroll, you'll have access to all modules for 1 year. The entire course is online and asynchronous, so it can be completed on your own schedule and at your own pace.

If you’re interested in receiving a certificate of completion, you’ll have until the end of your 1-year course access period to submit your completed assignments.

Our course developers will be regularly answering any questions you have throughout your 1-year access period as well.

  • If you complete all modules and assignments prior to the end of your 1-year course access period, you’ll receive a course completion certificate.

  • The time commitment varies, but we estimate each module takes 4-8 hours to complete, which includes time spent on assignments.

The assignments are about directly relating the content back to your experiences and your work; therefore, how much time can be quite variable depending on how much background work you choose to do.

In terms of the resources provided, it’s up to you how many you’d like to take a look at!

  • You’ll have access to all course content for 1 year starting from the date you enroll.
