Looking back at 2024
2024 was buzzing at TCI! It was another incredible year, full of activity and inspiring progress.
Memorable highlights
📄 Releasing our Implementation Support Core Competencies and Functions
Shifting the role of the implementation support practitioner more prominently into the spotlight has been a priority for us over the last several years. We launched our Implementation Support Specialist certificate program in 2022, held a joint event on Supporting the Implementation Support Practitioner with the Collaborative for Implementation Practice in 2023, and released a new set of core competencies specifically for this role in 2024.
As part of this release, we developed 3 interconnected resources that showcase:
10 core competencies of implementation support practitioners, which emphasize the technical knowledge and skills required to adequately support implementation.
5 core functions of implementation support practitioners, which communicate the “essence” of the role.
🎬 Releasing a new course on the Hidden Curriculum
In September, we released our latest Level 2 course, Hidden Curriculum: Igniting Change From the Middle, where we describe the things support practitioners do within their role that are often not highlighted as ‘technical’ implementation skills but are perhaps more important.
Releasing this course was a huge milestone and we’ve received a great response to thinking about implementation support in this way. To be fully transparent, this was the most challenging course we have ever built. We did some very deep thinking to pinpoint and articulate the nuances of providing high-quality implementation support.
We’re very proud of the Hidden Curriculum (there’s no other course like it!). It truly lifts up the difficult work that implementation support practitioners do.
🏅 Establishing a new partnership with SIRC
We announced our partnership with the Society for Implementation Research Collaboration (SIRC) at the beginning of 2024, which was a great move towards one of our key goals: bridging the implementation science-to-practice gap.
We’ve seen the impact this partnership has had so far:
At the SIRC conference in September, where we held our joint preconference workshop on Considering Context Across the Lifespan of Implementation, exciting conversations emerged.
Dr. Julia Moore, TCI’s Executive Director, has also been involved in SIRC’s Practitioner Network of Expertise (PNoE) and I3 (Implementation Infrastructure Initiative), which facilitated a discussion at the SIRC conference about the many roles of implementation support practitioners and what kinds of supports they are looking for.
We’re looking forward to collaborating more with SIRC in the future!
🌍 Seeing the growing demand for implementation science and practice
We say this every year — that implementation science and practice is growing — but there was a more powerful demand for this work in 2024 across many fields, sectors, geographies, etc. With the organizations we’ve worked with and their initiatives we supported, we’ve seen a greater recognition of the importance of implementation science and practice.
📚 Becoming faculty members
Dr. Julia Moore, Executive Director, and Dr. Sobia Khan, Director of Implementation, joined the faculty of Healthcare Excellence Canada’s EXTRA™: Executive Training Program.
To be involved in shaping how healthcare leaders think about implementation is a wonderful opportunity!
🌐 Working with more researchers
This past year, we worked with more researchers than ever before, which again speaks to our goal of bridging the implementation science-to-practice gap.
💬 Receiving great feedback as an organization
This highlight is a shoutout to our hard-working team. Our interactive tools, thoughtful design, and user-friendly resources have received rave reviews by many changemakers we’ve supported. We’ve also received feedback about how smoothly we operate as a team. (We do love working with each other!)
In short, TCI is becoming a “well-oiled machine”!
A few of the incredible initiatives we worked on
CalHOPE – Scaling support for social and emotional learning implementation across the state of California.
Research Adoption and Support Center (RASC) – Developing practical tools for the dissemination and implementation of evidence-based practices for substance use disorders and pain management.
Healthcare Excellence Canada (HEC) – Training future healthcare leaders in the EXTRA™: Executive Training Program.
Shatterproof – Intervention mapping for addiction stigma reduction in workplaces.

What’s coming up
In line with our vision of seeing millions of changemakers worldwide actively applying best practices in implementation science to their initiatives, here’s what we’ll be working on this year!
For release in 2025:
An updated Map2Adapt tool. This tool will provide an interactive guided tour through the process of making adaptations: assessing the need for them, developing adaptation plans, and assessing their potential impacts.
An updated Context Compass Framework and Tool for navigating contextual barriers. (We’ve made great changes based on your survey feedback and the insights shared during user testing sessions.)
Our new list of implementation functions and strategy intentions.
Plus…
We’re filming our new Level 2 online course on context, adaptations, and sustainability in 2025 so that it can be released in 2026.
By 2026, everything will be ready for professionals to get certified as Level 2 Implementation Support Specialists.
Thanks for including us on your implementation journey!
We look forward to continuing to support you in your change efforts in the year ahead!
